In 2007 our founders - Mary Dupont, Sheryl Seyfert, and Bebe and Fred Dudley - started helping twelve small boys living in an orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania. The friends were providing supplies, raising funds and visiting with the children when they realized the education the boys were receiving in the public primary schools was not preparing them for secondary school.
They did a survey of the schools and found they didn't have supplies or books, the teacher-student ratio was on average one teacher for every 90 students, and the instructors hadn't received adequate training to teach English, a requirement for secondary school.
The four friends decided that if the boys they were helping were ever going to have a chance at a better future they needed to go to better schools.
They established EfforTZ Foundation in 2010 to provide scholarships to orphaned and abandoned boys, as well as impoverished children. After discovering the tragic plight of Maasai girls, who were being sold into marriage, they expanded the program to include these girls.
EfforTZ has made a commitment to help these children not only through secondary school but through institutions of higher learning.
Providing an Education for Tanzania's Children
We believe every child deserves an education and a chance at a better life.
"EfforTZ is one of the best nonprofits in Tanzania. I have known EfforTZ, its founders and some of the students they
help, for six years. During this time, I have observed how EfforTZ has managed to change the lives of these children. My wife and I are sponsoring two (boys) through EfforTZ. I am a Tanzanian teacher with experience teaching in both Tanzania and now the US."
Our mission is to provide a quality education to Tanzania's most disadvantaged children.
Our programs provide scholarships to Maasai girls and orphaned and abandoned boys. We currently have 50 students in our scholarship program. We also provide school supplies to nearly 4,000 students in public and non-profit schools, and offer Tanzanian teachers English literacy learning activities, lesson plans, and examples of effective classroom instruction.
Our goal is to help needy young people reach their full potential as adults so they may contribute to the betterment of their communities and their country. We also work to change attitudes among the Maasai community about the value of educating girls.
EfforTZ Foundation is a 501(c)(3), tax-deductible non-profit run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Our US board members, officers, and volunteers receive no compensation for their services.
"My husband and I have supported EfforTZ from its beginning. The founders of EfforTZ are personally involved and donate their time and energy. We are so happy to sponsor a scholarship each year and to know that one of the children is going to have a completely different life because of us and the good work EfforTZ performs. While I may never see the scholarship recipient in person, the photos of the smiling faces of healthy, happy children is reward enough for me. "
EfforTZ Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity.
