Teaching children a second language requires a special set of skills. It requires more oral language development with a focus on listening and speaking and ample opportunities to hear and discriminate words and sounds.

Unfortunately, few Tanzanian teachers have had the chance to learn these skills. Combine this with an absence of English books and the inability of students to participate in class, and the development of English skills is sadly slow.

To address these problems, EfforTZ volunteer educators, when they are available, work in the primary schools providing enrichment activities intended to stimulate the students' desire to learn English while at the same time demonstrating the benefits of student participation and child-centered and learning-friendly methods of instruction to the teachers.

Under the guidance of our volunteers, the students use our "I Spy" books with magnifying glasses and perform plays from books like "Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed," to name just two of the enrichment activities our volunteers use.
Teachers are the single most important factor in improving and ensuring the quality of education.
